Saturday Night Dances

So, I work with teenagers (and tweens) at my day job (so much less formal than a courtroom, though, much heavier on the drama), and this Friday we are having a Dance Party. They requested it and I agreed to host it.

I've been planning a playlist--because no, I will not let them be in charge of it. Heaven forbid. It would be rated R for Raunchy.

Tonight I purchased some songs that I loved to dance to as a youngster (and that I think they will willingly dance to...I thought they were too cool for some of these songs, but surprisingly, they have made references to some of them, and just yesterday one of the "coolest" kids busted out the macarana for no good reason. Yes. I love tweens.) Just listening to the songs has taken me back to those awkward, yet very anticipated Saturday Night Stake Youth Dances. Wow. I loved those things.

Here's a few of my favorites:
The Electric Slide
500 Miles
Cotton Eyed Joe
YMCA
Chicken Dance (so utterly annoying, but you get to act like a chicken!)
Macarana (though it's never been a favorite, just hearing it takes me back to those dim cultural halls of my youth)
Dancing Queen (yeah, I thought the song was about me).

Maybe you have some suggestions, songs I've forgotten...I'd love to hear what they are (even if you've never attended a Saturday Night Stake Youth Dance, surely there's some song that when you hear it you think of a Rhythmic Ceremonial Ritual you attended in your youth.

How about the boot-scootin-boogie? That "Jump" song?

Man! The memories! Those were fun times! I was not surprised at all by your favorites list...mine would have been the same! You should come up again and we'll have a dance night too!

For some reason I remember "Lady in Red" always being played as for a slow song.

I always enjoyed Bon Jovi cheesy love songs at church dances. I used to think they were so meaningful. I also made sure and grabbed the cutest girl I could if they ever played Stairway to Heaven, because I knew we were in for the long haul.

Matthias! You crack me up. Way to be proactive.

Frau Magister, you are right on the money about Lady in Red, but I wouldn't DREAM of including that in a playlist (a) because it's a sappy slow song and the kids I work with aren't into sappy anythings; (b) because it makes me want to gag; (c) because it brings back all those memories of not being asked to dance during that sappy slow song. Wah.

I'm a little disappointed in myself for not remembering the boot scootin' boogie, Jon, and that Jump song would have been great.

I tried playing some Blink 182 (the one "she left me roses by the stairs, surprises let me know she cares" but the kids are too young for that one).

And, if you haven't already taken the time to see if you remember how to do the line dances to some of those songs from back in your dancing days, give it a try. Most of them came back to me without much effort.

Speaking of line dances, does anyone remember how to do the line dance to Get Jiggy With It?
